World in Conflict Dedicated Server
Q&A with Erik Karlsson, Online Operations Manager
Why should I download this? It’s already packed with the game!
ERIK: Well, we did include it on the retail disc, but we also got a lot of requests to have it as a stand-alone application so that hosts wouldn’t have to have the DVD just to host a server. It makes a lot of sense. We want it to be easy to set up new servers, so here it is!
So what’s so cool about the World in Conflict dedicated server?
ERIK: It’s a pretty straightforward thing, really. You can configure the server just the way you like it, and by that I mean game mode, player count, match length, etc. It’s perfect for the laid-back players who just want to mess around and have fun, as well as the more hardcore players who want to practice their tactics and strategies in specific situations.
Can I host a ranked server?
ERIK: Unfortunately not, but that’s because of our effort to make the World in Conflict Leaderboard fair. Giving the community that amount of unobserved power can really make a negative impact on the Leaderboards, making exploits impossible to track and deal with. It’s unfortunate, but something that all game’s online multiplayer modes have to deal with. However, you can still rent a ranked server from any of our server partners although it has some configuration limitations. The beauty of the unranked dedicated server package, like I mentioned, is that you can configure it anyway you want!
What hardware do I need to run a dedicated server?
ERIK: It’s pretty vague, but I’d say that 100 MB of memory should be just fine. When it comes to the CPU, it’s a lot easier to just run a server with people playing and check how much CPU power the server hogs in the Windows Task Manager. Most modern computers should do fine.
Is this the final version of the dedicated server?
ERIK: By all means, no! We’re constantly looking to improve and tweak it, and we’re regularly in talks with our partners and the community to see what we can do to make it better. The version we’re putting up for download now is the same you get with Update #2, so we’ve already made some improvements to what was available on the retail disc. We’ll keep taking care of it. After all, it’s the fuel that runs our entire online community!

A statement about community and dedicated server without leaving a single word about linux server sounds strange.

We signed up with Server Intellect and have really benfefited from the fact that a technician logs into the server once a month to perform security updates and software upgrades – free of charge! It’s such a great added bonus to us, so that we can focus on our business, and not worry about technical issues.
